LIFE SKILLS

 FIRST AID-LEVEL 1 TRAINING

We believe it is essential to provide the relevant and necessary skills training to our volunteers in the events of any of them getting injured while working. We have acquired the skills of a private training company to train some of our volunteers on first aid-level 1.

Today’s youth are facing many emerging issues such as global warming, famines, poverty, suicide, population explosion as well as social, emotional, physical and psychological issues. Cut-throat competition, unemployment, lack of job security, etc. are some of the major concerns for the educated and as a result, they are caught in the mad race. No one has time for his/her ‘self’, to develop empathy with surrounding and to have harmony in society.

Young mind is being considered, as the most productive members of the society, due to their physical and intellectual capability. But in real scenario, most of them are unable to utilize their potential in an appropriate way due to lack of guidance and motivation. Social problems like alcoholism, drug abuse, sexual abuse, smoking, juvenile delinquency, anti-social acts, etc. have an adverse effect on them and others too, to a large extent.

This new challenge requires immediate and an effective response from a socially responsible system of education. Education, now a days is hence, very important, but the kind of education, to support and live life better is more important. Thus, the cardinal focus of Education, therefore, needs an extraordinary emphasis on developing such skills in youth, as they are the important building blocks for a dynamic citizen, who can cope up with future challenges, and survive.

Operation Phakama has recognized this fact that it is necessary to develop life skills programs as well as empowering the youth and unemployed citizens , has made life skill education as a compulsory element in the organization. It has been felt, that life skills education bridges the gap between basic functioning and capabilities.

It strengthens the ability of an individual to meet the needs and demands of the present society. Thus, a relevant life skill education helps in dealing with the above issues in a manner to get desired behavior practical.

WOMEN'S MONTH

"WA THINTA A BAFAZI WA THINTHA IMBOKODO"

Operation Phakama has joined women by showing support in their quest to fight against gender based-violance and support them in ensuring their rightful place in society.

We repeat the slogan "wa thinta a bafazi wa thintha imbokodo" you strike a woman, you strike a rock.

Gender based violence remains one of the most persistent human rights violations in the world today.

To ensure every woman and girl can live free from violence, we must transform the gender norms which underpin violence, while addressing the connection between violence at the individual and systemic level.

Operartion Phakama supports women to implement survivor-centred and rights-based approaches to sexual and gender based violence across the spectrum from prevention to response, services, and access to justice.

Opertion Phakama works with women’ on conflict prevention, and to advocate for and contribute to robust reporting frameworks and accountability under national and international legal and policy frameworks relating to gender based violence, including the women peace and security agenda.

Women have the right to lead and make decisions in all spheres – from their homes and communities to global spaces.

Increasing diverse women’s access to leadership and expanding space for civil society is critical to transforming power.

We support safe spaces for feminist movements to come together to resist backlash, advance progress on gender equality and advocate for meaningful space for civil society.

FOOD SECURITY

 FOOD SECURITY

Food security is essential to people’s health and well-being . Further,  governments should actively seek to preserve their people’s lives and reduce the incidence of unnecessary mortality and avoidable illnesses . However, lack of food is one of the factors which affect health outcomes. Concerning this, the operation Phakama has liaised with local farmers to provide them with some of the access crops which will be distributed to the local community.

food insecurity is defined as "A situation that exists when people lack secure access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food for normal growth and development and an active and healthy life"  It is generally believed that food security and nutrition are crucial to improving human health and development. Studies show that millions of people live in food insecurity, which is one of the main risks to human health. One in three persons suffers from inadequacies related to hidden hunger, which impacts two billion people worldwide .

An important consequence of food insecurity is that around 9 million people die yearly worldwide due to hunger and hunger-related diseases. This is more than from Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), malaria, and tuberculosis combined . Even though the hunger crisis affects many people of all genders and ages, children are particularly affected in Africa. There are too many malnourished children in Africa, and malnutrition is a major factor in the high infant mortality rates and causes physical and mental development delays and disorders in.

In addition to the direct impact of food insecurity on health outcomes, it also indirectly contributes to disordered eating patterns, higher or lower blood cholesterol levels, lower serum albumin, lower hemoglobin, vitamin A levels, and poor physical and mental health. Iodine, iron, and zinc deficiency are the most often identified micronutrient deficiencies across all age groups. A deficiency in vitamin A affects an estimated 190 million pre-schoolers and 19 million pregnant women . Even though it is frequently noted that hidden hunger mostly affects pregnant women, children, and teenagers, it further affects people’s health at all stages of life .

The lack of suitable employment has created a burgeoning poverty crisis in our community and Operation Phakama is fighting for a change and the betterment of the residents of Modimolle.

SANITARY AWARENESS PROGRAMME

SCHOOL'S SANITARY AWARENESS

The Operation Phakama went on a school tour to hand out sanitary pads to eight (08) schools in modimolle. The aim was to raise awareness that 1 out of 10 girls can not afford to buy sanitary pads resulting to not coming to school.

the organization had agreed with the schools to find girls that are disadvantaged to receive them and be able to attend school.  Most of these school were primary schools as to the youngers to go on their menstrual cycle are aged 10-14 while still in primary. The challenges that menstruating girls, women, and other menstruators face encompass more than a basic lack of supplies or infrastructure.  While menstruation is a normal and healthy part of life for most women and girls, in many societies, the experience of menstruators continues to be constrained by cultural taboos and discriminatory social norms. The resulting lack of information about menstruation leads to unhygienic and unhealthy menstrual practices and creates misconceptions and negative attitudes, which motivate, among others, shaming, bullying, and even gender-based violence. For generations of girls and women, poor menstrual health and hygiene is exacerbating social and economic inequalities, negatively impacting their education, health, safety, and human development.

Health

When girls and women have access to safe and affordable sanitary materials to manage their menstruation, they decrease their risk of infections. This can have cascading effects on overall sexual and reproductive health, including reducing teen pregnancy, maternal outcomes, and fertility. Poor menstrual hygiene, however, can pose serious health risks, like reproductive and urinary tract infections which can result in future infertility and birth complications. Neglecting to wash hands after changing menstrual products can spread infections, such as hepatitis B and thrush.

• Studies have found that giving out sanitary pads to girls leads to a significant reduction in sexually transmitted infections and bacterial vaginosis.

• The lack of means for hygienic management of menstruation can cause discomfort and psychological stress and adds to the shame and sometimes depression that women and girls experience because of menstruation-related taboos and stigma .

Economy

Improving menstrual hygiene and providing access to affordable menstrual materials can help improve girls’ and women’s access to education, opening more options for jobs, promotions, and entrepreneurship, thus unleashing female contributions to the overall economy, rather than keeping them at home. In addition, feminine hygiene products are a multibillion-dollar industry, which, if properly tapped into, can generate income for many and significantly boost economic growth.

• Girls who drop out of school have limited employment opportunities and often marry early and begin bearing children, further reducing their options for earning income.

• Women who lack female-friendly sanitation facilities in the workplace lose wages for days of work missed during menstruation and are viewed as unreliable workers, diminishing options for advancement.

• Because of financial constraints or limited markets, many girls and women are unable to access adequate menstrual products.

Conclusion

On any given day, more than 300 million women worldwide are menstruating.  In total, an estimated 500 million lack access to menstrual products . To effectively manage their menstruation, girls and women require access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities, affordable and appropriate menstrual hygiene materials, information on good practices, and a supportive environment where they can manage menstruation without embarrassment or stigma.

We have distributed 960 sanitary pads in total to these 8 schools.
